The Skipton in Craven Civic Society was formed in 1961 with the intention of actively maintaining the town's unique character.
Many towns in the country were then suffering from poor planning at a time of heightened urban development.

The foundation of the Society hoped to prevent building development in the town which could be considered inappropriate due to its scale, materials or use.
To achieve this goal 4 aims were formulated;

  1. To promote high standards of planning and architecture in or affecting Skipton and the surrounding area.
  2. To educate the public in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area.
  3. To secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in the area.
  4. To pursue these objects by any means considered appropriate including meetings, lectures, study groups, exhibitions and publications.

Over the years the Society has worked hard to achieve the original goal.

Regular illustrated talks are given during the winter months to members and the public. These cover a wide range of subjects that may impact upon the area or are of general interest.
